Boundary Waters Trip 2022

Dates:  Saturday,July 9 – Sunday, July 17

Description:Canoe trek through the Boundary Waters Canoe area lead by our ASM (aformer guide).  The Boundary Waters arelocated on the US/Canadian border near Ely, Minnesota.

Cost:  ~ $340per person
Payments:  $100 non-refundable due1/10/22; remaining due in May

Itinerary:

Saturday, July 9 7am – Leave Hamilton
Saturday, July 9 – drive to Luther Bible Camp in Chetek, WI and stay the night
Sunday, July 10 – drive the remaining 3 hours to Ely, MN.  On the water by 1pm.  Enter at Moose Lake (#25)
Sunday, July 10-Saturday, July 16 – Canoe at least 50 miles (part of 50 MilerAward), camping at the designated campsites through the BWCA. Off the water bynoon on Saturday, July 16.
Saturday, July 16 – drive to Luther Bible Camp and camp overnight
Sunday, July 17 – Return to Hamilton, MI by dinner time.

Personal Gear List:

  • · Compass on a lanyard/cord
  • · Sleeping bag (small size or in a compression sack to make small)
  • · Backpacking tent/hammock (normal sized tent if two tenting together.  BSA prohibits non-relatives from tenting together during COVID)
  • · Sleeping pad for those in a tent
  • · Mess kit (purchased by Troop)
  • · 20 ft paracord or utility cord
  • · Hand sanitizer
  • · 2 Nalgene water bottles with carabiner style clip
  • · Small roll of duct tape, wrapped around one of the Nalgene bottles
  • · Lightweight notebook/pencil (journaling, drawing, Kodiak award)
  • · Tooth brush (we will share toothpaste)
  • · Lip balm with SPF
  • · Sunscreen
  • · Sunglasses with keeper strap
  • · Personal/prescription medication/hygiene
  • · Small bathing towel
  • · Headlamp of flashlight (one per tent/hammock)
  • · Whistle on a string that can go around your neck
  • · Small container of foot powder

Clothing:

  • · Boots: all boots must have full ankle coverage with a rugged stitch and vulcanized sole.  Ideally they should have a drainage valve.  Military style “jungle boots” are great ($35 on eBay)
  • · Camp shoes (tennis shoes) – must be closed toe with harder sole
  • · WaterPROOF rain jacket and pants (not just water RESISTANT)
  • · 2 lightweight long sleeved shirts (at least one made of nylon/poly…no cotton)
  • · 1 warm non-cotton long-sleeved jacket (fleece, wool, poly)
  • · 1 or 2 t-shirts..at least one non-cotton
  • · 2 pairs of quick dry pants (ideally with zip off legs)
  • · 2 hats: one stocking cap (winter) and one with a rim (ball cap)
  • · 1 pair of shorts (if you do not have zip off pants)
  • · 4 pairs of underwear, recommended synthetic/quick dry.  (2 for road, 2 for trek)
  • · Swimsuit
  • · Scout uniform (to be worn in the car)
  • · Clean, dry clothes for traveling home in
  • · Three bandanas
  • · 3 pairs of quality wool socks for the trek (they will get wet).
  • · 1 pair of socks for the road + 2 pairs for at campsite
  • · Belt or suspenders

Optional:

  • · Waterproof camera (no signal in BWCA, so while a phone is fine, a cheaper waterproof camera or a regular camera in a waterproof bag is better)
  • · Pocket knife/multi-tool (one per canoe)
  • · Fishing gear if desired
  • · Head net for bugs
